Use One Identifier Across Many Item Types

LabFREED identifiers (called PAC-ID) can be used for many types of laboratory assets:

• Devices
• Chemicals and substances
• Consumables
• Methods
• Results and datasets

This enables a consistent way to reference items across instruments, samples, documentation, and IT systems.

Avoid Relabeling Where Possible

If manufacturers provide PAC-IDs, laboratories can use these identifiers directly without introducing additional internal labels.

Where this is not yet the case, laboratories can still assign their own PAC-IDs. Even then, the same identifier can be reused across multiple systems and workflows, reducing the need for multiple parallel labels.

Direct Access to Relevant Information

PAC-IDs can guide users directly to relevant information about an item, for example:

• MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets)
• Certificates of Analysis (CoA)
• Operation manuals
• Maintenance instructions
• Support information

This allows staff to quickly find the information they need while working with equipment, chemicals, or procedures.

Add Your Own Links and Services

Laboratories can associate their own services with PAC-IDs by defining simple rules locally.

• Link PAC-IDs to internal documentation
• Connect identifiers to LIMS or ELN entries
• Associate maintenance records or calibration data
• Integrate PAC-IDs with existing workflows

These associations can be managed through configurable rule files, allowing laboratories to extend PAC-ID functionality without modifying the identifier itself.

Adopt Step by Step

PAC-ID adoption does not require a full infrastructure change. Laboratories can start small and expand usage over time.

• Begin with simple labeling
• Add scanners or software integration later
• Introduce additional services when needed

Because the identifier remains stable, workflows and services can evolve without changing the labels already in use.
