Many labs today still rely heavily on analog processes, from paper notebooks to manual data entry. This results in tedious data copying and frequent gaps in documentation.
While digitalization holds great potential, many initiatives overreach, becoming overly complex and ultimately failing to meet their goals.
LabFREED takes a different approach. We focus on solving small, everyday challenges with independent, yet complementary, building blocks. We are a community of computer scientists, chemists, and digitalization enthusiasts with a practical, down-to-earth mindset.

History
Our community brings together individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, united by a shared passion for laboratories and their future. Despite our differences, we share a wealth of hands-on experience:
- Working in analytical and research labs,
- Participating in lab integration projects,
- Engaging with the SiLA (Standardization in Laboratory Automation) community,
- Collaborating with manufacturers of laboratory equipment,
- Partnering with suppliers of laboratory software, including ELN and LIMS solutions.
Our story began when Buchi consulted wega about creating standards to connect laboratory environments. Through this collaboration, we discovered our mutual enthusiasm for improving lab workflows and a shared belief that digitalization in labs should empower, not constrain, the lab technician.
We also recognized a fundamental truth: laboratories will remain partially analog for the foreseeable future, and efforts to enforce 100% digitalization are likely to fall short. With these insights, our community was born—a group dedicated to bridging the gap between the digital and analog worlds of laboratories, fostering innovation, and supporting those who work at the heart of scientific discovery.
